Alaska, one of the last frontiers is wild and beautiful where fishermen share the water with the mighty bear. The Katmai National Park, which towers over the Naknek river below is home to caribou, wolves, bears, and bald eagles and many other wildlife are frequently sighted. Just south of the Alaska Peninsula is Mt Penlik, a 5,000-foot active volcano, providing a stunning backdrop for fishing !

The choice of species depends on the season. Early on in June Rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, Char and Grayling are feasting on the salmon fry heading for the ocean. As well as an abundance of massive insect hatches. This can make the dry fly fisherman’s dream come true.  Almost at the same time, millions of Sockeye and King Salmon begin flooding into the rivers as July is the height of the Sockeye and King salmon run. At the same time the Chum and Pink salmon start appearing, the latter arriving in millions. The King Salmon fishing ends before the beginning of August begins and as soon as they begin to spawn the Rainbow, Char, Dolly Varden and others start feeding almost non-stop on the salmon eggs and are easy prey for the fly fishermen. During August the Silver Salmon are running and by mid September they leave.  In September and October the Rainbow, Char and Grayling are abundant, and this is the time to land the largest Rainbow who has been feeding non stop since June!
